Megan the Vegan
My friend Erika likes to call me Megan the Vegan.. Funny thing is, I'm not really totally vegan. Lately I've been more committed to it. Really the only thing I ever have is cheese, which is usually just at restaurants that don't have vegan options. (Poo on the local restaurants!) I've been gradually gravitating from a vegetarian diet to a vegan one, and thanks to a new & improved Co-op, there's a lot more choices! Last week I visited PETA HQ in Norfolk for orientation... and watched videos of all sorts of horrible animal abuses, including what milk cows go through. I haven't had milk in forever (soy milk & rice milk are awesome!) and started using egg substitutes in baking. I have been using the ice cream maker I got for Christmas to make soy vanilla and lemon sorbet vegan ice creams. Yum!The problem I have is that most vegan cheese/dairy substitutes are really processed. And very few are organic. :( Which is quite a dilemma... what is better for you? I've been thinking about trying to make my own soy milk and soy cheese, but it'd be hard to imitate the yumminess that is Tofutti mozarella slices. Overly processed is almost as bad as dairy, but at least when I do get cheese, it's organic. Oh the dilemmas of being a consumer activist! :)
In other news, I was in Norfolk last week for orientation at PETA. I got to meet my co-workers in person and had a lot of fun hanging out with them. Norfolk has great choices for vegan food, too. And of course I loaded up on stickers, leaflets, and other goodies. I'm trying to round up a group of friends to go protest at KFC. Everyone I met at PETA was really nice and open-minded, and it's so cool that there's pooches running around in the office! It was a good trip, but a long day of traveling there and back!
Well, there is a reggae band playing tonight, time to go check it out!
